How Hormones Affect Libido and What to do About it

How hormones can affect your sex drive

It’s the loss of the estrogen and testosterone hormones that lead to changes in a woman’s body and sexual drive. This loss often occurs in menopausal and postmenopausal women, where they may notice that they’re not as easily aroused and are less sensitive to touching, which can lead to a decreased interest in sex.

Lower levels of estrogen can also cause a drop in blood supply to the vagina, which can affect vaginal lubrication, causing the vagina to be too dry for comfortable sex.

Loss of libido – a common issue

Loss of libido is a common issue affecting up to one in five men and many more women. It’s typically linked to stress, declining hormones or life-changing events such as pregnancy, childbirth, bereavement, breastfeeding, and as mentioned above, the menopause.

What can you do to increase sex drive?

A testosterone cream can be applied daily to increase vaginal sensitivity.

You can also enhance your diet with zinc. Zinc is a very important nutrient for the senses and can heighten our sensitivity of taste, touch or smell. A rich source of zinc is shellfish, especially oysters, as well as pine nuts, spinach, rye, almonds, sesame seeds and brown rice.

How we can help

If you’re having libido issues, one of the best places to start is by getting your hormone levels checked.

Why Combine Focused & Radial Shockwave?

While some clinics offer just one type, at Levitas, we combine both focused and radial shockwave therapy in each session. Why?

  • Focused shockwave penetrates deeper, making it ideal for tendons, calcifications, and chronic inflammation.
  • Radial shockwave disperses energy across a wider area — perfect for releasing muscle tension and aiding in muscle recovery.

Together, this dual-modality approach enhances tissue healing from the inside out. Sessions last 45–60 minutes, giving us time to treat both superficial and deep pain effectively — and that’s why our outcomes are consistently better.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy for Muscle Recovery

Shockwave therapy is not only for injury — it’s also a powerful tool for post-exercise recovery and sports rehabilitation. Whether you’re an athlete or someone just trying to stay active, the benefits include:

  • Faster recovery from intense workouts
  • Reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
  • Improved circulation to fatigued muscles
  • Loosening of tight fascia and trigger points
  • Enhanced performance and injury prevention

If you’re in Wimbledon, Knightsbridge, or Guildford, our local clinics can support your recovery journey without disrupting your routine.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

  1. Medical Assessment: Your treatment is led by a doctor, not just a technician. We diagnose your issue thoroughly.
  1. Shockwave Application: We apply both radial and focused waves in a 45–60 minute session.
  1. Immediate Walk-Out: No need for anaesthesia or rest. Resume work or training the same day.
  1. Follow-Up: Most people need 3–6 weekly sessions. We assess and adapt your plan each time.
